WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN INFRARED SAUNA AND A TRADITIONAL SAUNA?

There’s a big difference between an infrared sauna and a traditional sauna. This blog article aims to clarify this.

HOW DOES A TRADITIONAL SANA HEAT?

A traditional sauna uses heat generated from a heating stove with rocks to warm the air. The rocks work in tandem with electricity to maintain heat. Once the rocks reach the desired temperature, you have to pour water over them to create steam. As a lot of heat is lost in the air, you have to heat the sauna to a higher temperature, for the body to receive benefits.

If you love hot, humid conditions, you may enjoy a traditional sauna. If you don’t love the heat and humidity, you may find it to be draining and exhausting. If you suffer from breathing issues, lung issues and asthmatic conditions, you may find it difficult to breathe freely in a traditional sauna.

HOW DOES AN INFRARED* SANA HEAT?

An infrared saunas uses light to make heat; infrared saunas use the wavelength of the visible and non-visible light spectrum of sunlight that heats the body normally. Infrared sauna therapy is therefore very similar to sunlight, without the harmful ultraviolet rays.

Due to creating heat from light, an infrared sauna heats your body directly without warming the air around you. This results in deeper tissue penetration - without the need for extreme temperatures.

Infrared heat has been scientifically proven to be easily absorbed by the body and offer a user experience similar to a deep tissue massage.

If you prefer lower temperatures, with deep body penetrating heat, then you may prefer infrared sauna therapy. If you have pre-existing breathing, lung and heart conditions, this will definitely be the option for you.

*Infrared saunas are sometimes referred to as ‘far’-infrared saunas - ‘far’ describing where the infrared waves fall on the light spectrum.

HOW HOT IS HOT ENOUGH?

The benefits of infrared sauna therapy can be derived from 45 to 50°C. These lower temperatures allow you to tolerate a longer sauna session and derive great therapeutic benefit. When turned to around 60°C, the sweat will be produced faster.

Traditional saunas on the other hand need to have air temperatures of around 70 to 80°C to induce sweat.

There is no need for extreme heat in order to derive the therapeutic health benefits of infrared sauna therapy….

By investing in infrared sauna therapy, we are offering you so many benefits;

  • We love that it is natural; infrared heat is the same type of heat as produced by the sun and our bodies.
