UNCOVERING RED LIGHT THERAPY

I will delve deeply into the benefits of red light therapy in a series of six blog posts that will follow this one (there are simply too many benefits to fit them into one article), but for now I wanted simply explain what red light therapy is and how it works.

WHAT IS RED LIGHT THEAPY?

Red light therapy is the delivery of low-energy red and near-infrared (NIR) light waves to the body via LED bulbs. It is a completely natural and non-invasive treatment that heals the body on a cellular level. It can penetrate deep into the dermis, all the while using very low levels of heat so it doesn’t hurt or burn the skin.

The sun is our primary source of radiant energy, but as we know too well, not all of this energy is beneficial - especially if you live in Australia! Too much exposure to the sun can damage skin our skin, causing; burns, sun spots, pigmentation ageing and skin cancers.

Red light therapy provides us with the health benefits of the sun, without any of the dangerous side effects. (Your skin is not exposed to damaging UV rays like in tanning booths.)

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Red light therapy allows very low wavelengths to penetrate the skin and stimulate the production of mitochondria in the cells. Mitochondria produce energy by breaking down glucose (from food) with oxygen, into “adenosine triphosphate , (ATP). ATP is our energy; when we breathe, eat, sleep and move , we get our power from ATP.

Red light therapy creates ‘hormesis’ - low-dose stress in the cell. This in turn causes the body to; boost protein synthesis and enzyme activation, strengthen anti-inflammatory and antioxidant defences and improve overall health and resilience of cells. Red light waves also increase blood flow, thereby improving nutrient and oxygen delivery to cells throughout the body.

So, in a nutshell, red light stimulates cells to produce more energy, allowing cells to rejuvenate and work more efficiently.

LETS TALK ABOUT THE RED & INFRARED LIGHT SPECTRUM

Light waves are measured in nanometres (nm).

On the red light spectrum, the human eye can see most of the light waves (that is, those ranging from 625nm – 750nm).

The infrared light spectrum is comprised of near, mid and far-infrared waves. (Ranging from 750nm – 1mm). This is invisible to the human eye, but we feel it as heat.

  • Near Infrared is the shortest wavelength, and will be absorbed just below the surface of the skin creating a sweat that promotes healing and revitalization.

  • Mid infrared is a longer wavelength that can penetrate deeper into the body’s soft tissue increasing circulation, releasing oxygen to reach injured areas.

  • Far infrared is the longest wavelength which penetrates the fat cells causing vasodilation, where the fat cells vibrate to expel toxins, resulting in the greatest levels of detoxification and stimulate your metabolism to aid in weight-loss.

Red and NIR light have the same biological benefits and work together, penetrating up to 5 - 10cm below the surface of the skin. Red light waves penetrate the superficial layers of the skin, and NIR targets deeper tissues like nerves, muscles, tendons and bone.

NOT ALL RED LIGHT THERAPY UNITS ARE THE SAME

Recharge Plus underwent a huge amount of research before selecting their unit. We are proud of the reasons you should have your red light therapy at Recharge Plus, as our units are:

  • Formulated with targeted 660nm red light and 850nm infrared light for maximum impact and benefits

  • Emit an ultra-low electromagnetic frequency

  • Have unique flicker- free technology for eye health and safety

  • Are fully compliant with the Australian electrical safety standards for light therapy boxes (which is stricter, and safer, than US and UK regulation).

We are committed to a whole body and mind approach, helping you be the best you can and live your best life - from the inside out!
